Overview
Riot Games has released a video to kick off Season 2024 of League of Legends (League) and LoL Esports, which includes a preview of the second season of "Arcane."
The event marks the start of the League's Ranked and tournament season for both casual and professional players. It's also a time to update players on upcoming content.
Andrei van Roon, Head of League Studio, said:
Season Start is a moment to set the stage for the weeks and months ahead and provide a sneak peek at some of the content the team has been working on. We hope you're excited about what you've seen so far for 2024. This year is also extra special because we'll be celebrating League's 15th birthday in October! Best of luck on your climbs, and welcome to Season 2024.
In 2024, League of Legends players can expect a range of updates, including Arcane-inspired gameplay and characters, changes to the Champion Mastery system, the return of Arena, and a brand new game mode, among others.
Moreover, LoL Esports made some changes to the qualification rules for their two major tournaments, which are the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) and the League of Legends World Championships (Worlds). Additionally, they announced the LoL Esports Hall of Legends, which is League's own version of a Hall of Fame.
A new cinematic video in the style of The Call, Ruination, and Warriors will launch the upcoming season on January 10, 2024.
Arcane Season 2
Riot Games has previously announced that the global release of Arcane Season 2 is scheduled for November. As part of the celebration for the new season, Ambessa Medarda, who first appeared in Season 1, will be joining the Rift later this year, along with the previously mentioned Arcane champion VGU. Alongside these, League of Legends will also receive Arcane-inspired gameplay, an in-game update for one of the beloved champions in the show, and new skins upon the release of the new season.
LoL Champions in 2024
- Skarner's visual gameplay update (VGU) will be released on the Rift in the first half of this year.
- After Skarner, Riot Games will work on two other champion updates: a champion featured in Arcane, which will be updated to better match their depiction in the TV series, and Shyvana, who will be receiving special attention around her gameplay.
- Smolder the Fiery Fledgling is scheduled to be released on Public Beta Environment (PBE) on January 9, 2024.
- Players can look forward to a new champion after Smolder, who will be a Vastayan mage specialized in solo-laning and mid-range combat.
LoL Skins in 2024
- Rammus and Olaf will be getting skins.
- The first half of 2024's Prestige skins will be for Rakan, Ezreal, Kindred, Evelynn, and Kayle (in that order).
- Riot Games is working through Lee Sin's skin catalog now, and his art and sustainability update (ASU) will be available to players in early May.
- Teemo's ASU is taking the team longer than intended. An updated timeline will be shared later this year.
- Lunar Revel, the first event of the year, will feature the new skinline Heavenscale and returning thematic Porcelain. Players can look forward to the following skins in patch 14.3 and 14.4:
- Heavenscale Lee Sin

League of Legends Systems in 2024
Riot Games has announced that they will be making improvements to the Ranked system in Season 2024. These improvements include better evaluation of player skill to reduce mismatches between players with vastly different ranks, as well as changes to League Points (LP) to ensure that players do not lose more points than they gain.
Further, the Champion Mastery system will undergo changes during the first half of the year.
Riot also announced that Valorant's anti-cheat engine, known as Vanguard, will soon be implemented in League of Legends. This decision has been made in response to the growing feedback around the high number of bots in games, disruptive smurfs in Ranked, and an increase in scripting. The new implementation will allow for the live termination of matches and will refund LP to players who have played with or against detected cheaters and bots.
LoL Game Modes in 2024
- Arena will be coming back in the first half of 2024 with more improvements:
- The number of teams in a game of Arena will increase from four teams of two to eight (for a total of 16 players).
- Changes to the User Interface (UI) will be made accordingly, and there will be new Augments, maps, and other improvements.
- Ultra Rapid Fire (URF) will be back for Lunar Revel in Patch 14.3 and 14.4 and One-For-All after that.
- A new game mode is set to launch later this year. The mode offers a new way to enjoy League of Legends with friends.

From 2024, the champions of MSI will receive an automatic qualification for Worlds along with an additional slot for their region.
