Activision has announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, revealing the first-person shooter game's first trailer, editions, and preorder benefits. COD Modern Warfare 3 is slated for release on November 10, 2023. Check out more details below.
Game Overview
Call of Duty is back with a straight sequel for the first time in back-to-back years. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III picks up right where last year's huge hit Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II left off. This brand-new experience will be available worldwide on Friday, November 10. For the first time, players will be able to continue their journey, progression, and story without interruption for the next year.
Prepare for a brand-new Campaign that picks up the story right after what happened in Modern Warfare II. In partnership with Infinity Ward, lead developer Sledgehammer Games will deliver a full Campaign of action-packed missions, from signature cinematic experiences to free-form Open Combat Missions. This will give players more options than ever before.
Further, Expect a world-class multiplayer experience that honors the best parts of the Modern Warfare series. All 16 launch maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) have been updated with new modes and gameplay features and will be available at launch to get everyone started. After launch, live seasons will be powered by over 12 all-new core 6v6 maps.
In the biggest Call of Duty Zombies map ever, you can team up with other squads for the first time to stay alive and fight huge groups of zombies. Modern Warfare Zombies (MWZ) is a new Zombies story from creator Treyarch. It has missions, core Zombies features, and a lot of secrets to find.
Campaign: Adapt or Die in a Fight Against the Ultimate Threat
Captain Price and Task Force 141 face off against the ultimate threat in the straight sequel to the record-breaking Modern Warfare II. Vladimir Makarov, an ultranationalist, is getting stronger all over the world. This is making Task Force 141 fight harder than ever before.
In combat, you have to make choices, like using different Loadouts and planning different routes for each action in a long, exciting Campaign. In Modern Warfare III, there are also Open Combat Missions, which put even more focus on player choice than the cinematic Call of Duty missions. In an action-packed Modern Warfare single-player game, you'll have access to all the weapons, equipment, and tactics.
Open Combat Missions
Open Combat Missions (OCMs) are a new addition to the Call of Duty Campaign. Not only do these missions go well with the cinematic ones, but they also give you a lot more options for how to complete the mission.
Feel free to use any operable vehicles within your area of operations. You can try out and use tactical and lethal equipment, and you have the freedom to move around the large area of a mission's AO and approach targets from different directions. With Open Combat Missions, you can really play the way you want to.
Multiplayer: It's Time to Settle Old Scores and Start New Ones
Modern Warfare III marks Call of Duty's 20th anniversary with one of the best collections of Modern Warfare Multiplayer maps ever put together.

All 16 launch maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) have been updated, both graphically and in terms of their authenticity and the things that made them so famous. Players who have played Modern Warfare for a long time love these Core 6v6 maps, and there's no better time to let a new generation of players try out the game's most popular content.
Get ready for a mix of classic style and modern gameplay. This faithful update keeps the maps' original feel while adding the latest tech, gameplay, modes, content, and more.

For example, you can choose to play Hardpoint and Kill Confirmed on Favela, modes that were never part of the original map offering but offer a fresh multiplayer experience in these familiar environments.
Going Big with Brand-New Maps. Ground War and War Modes Return!
The 16 Core launch maps are joined by four huge environments that are ready to play at launch and have many new places to play. These are made up of three brand-new Battle Maps, which are large locations where Modern Warfare III's Ground War and Invasion game modes will be played, and a single, huge War map, as Modern Warfare III marks the welcome return and evolution of the legendary War Mode, which first appeared in 2017's Call of Duty: WWII.
All-New Core Map Content Comes to Live Season Content
Fans' best maps from Modern Warfare will be updated for Day One Multiplayer, and over 12 brand-new core 6v6 maps will keep live seasons going after launch.
Multiplayer Features: New Mechanics and Robust Customization
You can expect many new ways to customize the game and new ways to play that will change the fast-paced gameplay even more. Here are three new innovations:
- New Gameplay Innovation: Tac-Stance
- Breach and clear with the new Tactical Stance feature, a perfect middle-ground between hip-fire and aiming down sights. This optional feature, available to toggle on and off during match gameplay, strikes the perfect balance between mobility and accuracy.
- New Gameplay Innovation: Evolving Loadouts
- Modern Warfare III brings new levels of customization to Create-a-Class. Get ready to build your Loadout based on cutting-edge military helmets, gloves, tactical vests, boots and more, allowing you to customize more aspects of gameplay.
- New Gameplay Innovation: After-Market Parts
- The evolution of the Gunsmith continues with the addition of After-Market Parts. This is a special set of customization options allowing focus on your preferred and specific playstyle. After-Market Parts enable you to construct unique weapon configurations or types, and will offer new progression paths, challenges to unlock, and the use of these parts will open up new approaches to complete existing weapon challenges.
Activision said they will be sharing more information on these innovations in the coming weeks.
Multiplayer Features: Changes to Core Mechanics
Modern Warfare III's core mechanics have a huge number of classic features that give players a lot of freedom of choice, movement, and customization.
The Return of Classic Gameplay

- All chosen Perks are available at the start of each match.
- The Covert Sneakers Perk allows for silent movement
- Core Multiplayer Health is increased, lengthening the Time-to-Kill (TTK).
Movement in Modern Warfare III: Responsiveness
When maneuvering in Modern Warfare III Multiplayer, expect the following movement abilities in terms of your Operator’s general responsiveness:
- You can cancel Slide animations (i.e., "slide cancel"), but Slide Cancelling does not reset Tactical Sprint.
- You can cancel a Reload during an animation (i.e., "reload cancel").
- Mantling is faster, and you can Mantle while Sprinting.
- You can fire during and immediately after Sliding and more.
Multiplayer Features: Carry Forward
As talked about in the Carry Forward Deep Dive Q&A Blog, you can take a lot of content and weapon progression from Modern Warfare 2 to Modern Warfare 3. That means you'll be able to use every Multiplayer weapon you already have in Modern Warfare 2, as well as all the new weapons in Modern Warfare 3, on Day One.
- The depth of choice here truly honors the player investment into Modern Warfare II.
- All MWII weapons, attachments, and unlocks will Carry Forward. There will be seamless functionality between new attachments and global Weapon Platforms.
- Any MWII attachments that were considered "universal" will be available to attach to MWIII weapons, where applicable.
- In certain cases, MWII weapons carried forward into MWIII will be able to utilize MWIII attachments that you unlock, where applicable.
- The number of Weapon Platforms (AKA "Receivers") have been increased for some categories, reducing restrictions on weapon customization by allowing for core attachments to be added to your favorite MWII weapons.
Zombies: An All-New, Open World
In the biggest Call of Duty Zombies map ever, you can work with other squads for the first time to stay alive and fight huge groups of zombies. Modern Warfare Zombies (MWZ) is a game that takes place in the Modern Warfare world and tells a long, strange story about Dark Aether Zombies. You can expect to go on tasks in different areas that get harder as you go, with core Zombies features and a lot of secrets to find. Get ready for an open-world person versus enemy (PvE) extraction survival experience against some of Call of Duty's biggest enemies.
