M2 World Championship: BREN bags gold, beating Burmese Ghouls 4-3

Philippines' BREN Esports defeated Myanmar's Burmese Ghouls, 4-3, to claim the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang M2 World Champions title on January 24, 2021. The M2 World Championship was a live esports event held at the Shangri-La hotel in Singapore, streamed online via Facebook.

With their team bagging gold, BREN Esports took the largest share of US$140,000 out of the tournament's US$300,000 prize pool. The team was allowed to design their own championship skin for a hero of their choice, along with their branding.

The 2019 SEA Games' gold medalist BREN went up against Burmese Ghouls in the grand finals after battling through a staggering lower bracket run. They defeated Todak and Alter Ego back-to-back and beat Indonesia's RRQ Hoshi in the lower bracket finals.

Burmese Ghouls initiated the series in control of game one, getting 12 kills quickly before 10 minutes. However, the BREN squad was steadfast as they dominated the clash around the 11-minute mark to take control of the first Lord and cut their opponent's kill lead to 13-9, also bringing gold lead in their favor.

By consistently applying pressure to the opponent, BREN's KarlTzy (Claude) then intensified smoothly and accumulated a 5-3-10 KDA to help BREN end the game in the 20th minute, taking their first win in the series.

Bren Esports carried the momentum in game two, as they took six straight kills after just four minutes and continued controlling the game at the 12-minute mark, scoring a 26-4 kill tally. Despite Burmese Ghouls' best efforts to defend, they couldn't stop BREN Esports from getting a 2-0 series lead.

Burmese Ghouls showed their methodical objective-oriented playstyle against Bren Esports as they controlled the third set. The continuous lead in gold and control of the map allowed them to slowly choke out Bren Esports after 13 minutes and eventually securing their first win of the series.

BREN had a strong start in the fourth set but could not stop the Burmese Ghouls team's aggressiveness from attacking their base and grinding out a 19-minute win to tie up the series 2-2.

Game 5 brings the same scenario for BREN. They couldn't convert their lead as Burmese Ghouls reached match point with essential wins for a 3-2 series lead.

BREN gets back the control in Game 6 by unleashing their unorthodox tank Brody pick for KarlTzy and banning opponents' core heroes who performed well in the past two sets. The pivotal sixth set of the series was a grueling fight, with both teams on equal standing 8 minutes in with nine kills, respectively. Bren Esports totally annihilated the Burmese Ghouls in a colossal clash at the 14-minute mark that gave them control of Luminous Lord, finishing the set at 17 minutes. Posting a 9/1/11 KDA on Brody, KarlTzy helps his team earn a 26-18 kill advantage to force the finals to a do-or-die decider in game seven.

BREN finally takes down Burmese Ghouls in game seven. Even Burmese Ghouls were leading in the early game, BREN managed to control the Lord at the 12-minute mark and had a 14-12 kill lead. BREN pushed lanes and destroys opponents' defensive turrets to achieve ultimate victory after 14 minutes.
