Brief Introduction
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is a Korean Drama TV Series by MBC starring Lee Sung-Kyung in the title role. It is a coming-of-age sports drama inspired by the life of the South Korean Olympic gold-medalist Jang Mi-ran. It aired on MBC every Wednesday and Thursday at 22:00 (KST), starting November 16, 2016, to January 11, 2017. Despite getting the lowest average rating of 4.6% against its drama competitors, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo still manages to gain popularity through social media because of the viral scene 'Do you like Messi?'. This originated from the Episode 2 scene. When Nan Hee (Jo Hye Jung) requested Bok Joo to ask if Joon Hyung likes soccer player Lionel Messi to pique his interest, she says guys are attracted to girls who share the same interest in sports.

My Review (Attention: SPOILER ALERT!)
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is a friends-turned-lovers story of two athletes, Kim Bok-Joo as a weightlifter and Jung Joon-Hyung as a swimmer, both studying in the same sports university. I found this drama very interesting because we seldomly saw a drama where a female character has masculine characteristics or is involved in manly sports, which is exactly the case of Kim Bok Joo. This strong female weightlifter is not what we think she must be boyish, but not, she has a strong appearance but a soft heart just like other girls. Including her best friends/roommates, Lee Sun Ok and Jung Nan Hee, they formed a perfectly funny and strong trio that will always make you laugh when they talked to each other and do the 'Swag,' haha.
Going back to the main story, Bok Joo and Joon Hyung were both athletes in the same sports university but didn't know each other until in the pool scene when Kim Bok-Joo falls into the swimming pool, and Jung Joon-Hyung jumps into the pool to save her. They realized that they had seen each other before. When they were both children, Kim Bok-Joo saved Jung Joon-Hyung's life by catching him before he fell to the ground. But their love interest doesn't start there yet because Bok Joo doesn't like Joon Hyung, instead Jung Jae Yi, which is Joon Hyung's older stepbrother. Kim Bok Joo is head over heels in love with Jae Yi, but Jae Yi's feeling for her is like a brother-sister relationship only, and he likes Ko Ah Young, his college medical classmate. Bok Joo kept it secret to others or also known as one-sided love. But when Joon Hyung knew this secret admiration of Bok Joo to his stepbrother, all confrontations were done. After that, Bok Joo loses hope, but the sadness of Bok Joo was gone when Joon Hyung comforts her every day, and as the story goes on, they both build a love interest with each other. They temporarily separated from each other when Bok Joo was picked to participate in the Olympics and needs to stay in the gym where Korean Olympians are trained. They long for each other until they met again and continued their cheesy love story.
But I also applaud the third wheel, Shong Shi Ho, despite liking Joon Hyung again because they have had a relationship in the past, and she chose to move on and focus on being a professional gymnast. And also, their coaches Yoon Duk Man and Choi Sung Eun, were very supportive of the weightlifting team even when a problem occurs. That problem is when Sung Eun was suspended because she used the team's funds to bail Bang Woon Ki. This scenario brings worry to the weightlifting team, so they rally for the re-assignment of Sung Eun. Their perseverance made the school committee decide to re-assign Sung Eun, and they felt very happy. And this started the love interest between Duk Man and Sung Eun. But Dae Ho, uncle of Bok Joo, also has a crush on Sung Eun but wasn't successful.
Overall, I like Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo; despite its low rating in South Korea, it possesses the best quality in a drama because you can see the real love here. You can't judge a person until you met her and known her. Bok Joo is not just a weightlifter of barbell but also a weightlifter of hearts of the audience.
My Rating
8/10
